Thinking About Getting Into Social Media? Think Again!
Many business owners are hesitant to get into social media. It sounds too much like hype and another bubble in the making. Small businesses do not have either money or time to waste and getting into social media appears to be just that – a waste of both.
As a business owners you might be thinking about getting on Facebook or Twitter just because everyone does it, including your competitors. If this is your only motivating factor, then your efforts will likely be wasted. Instead of thinking how you can squeeze social media into your business strategy, what you really need is to reshape your strategy.
In his post titled “Don’t Get Into Social Media“, Augie Ray makes a point that
Having a goal of “getting into” Web 2.0 makes no more sense than a goal of “getting into” television advertising, Out of Home, or the Web.
He further compares how businesses deal with opportunities provided by social media with adoption of Web 1.0 into every business process several years ago. The post seems to be geared more towards larger organizations, but its advice can also be applied to small businesses:
do not treat social media as just another tool in your marketing toolkit. Instead change the way you do business and review your business goals to match the needs for transparency and interactiveness that are at the base of social media networks.
